Talk with Justices Patterson, Timpone to kick off Christie Institute’s spring series

The Christie Institute for Public Policy, working in partnership with Seton Hall University School of Law, announced a series of conversations on the benefits of bipartisan public service — starting with an event next Tuesday, featuring New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Anne Patterson, and former New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Walter Timpone.
This series will take place through live monthly video conversations during the Law School’s 2021 spring term. Register here.
Additional events are scheduled for March 16 and April 22. Those participants will be announced shortly, the institute said.
“It has never been clearer that we need the best, brightest and most ethical law students and lawyers engaged in developing and executing sound public policy for our states and our country,” former Gov. Chris Christie said.
“It is our hope that this series of conversations will inspire law students and recently-graduated lawyers to consider devoting part of their careers in service to this noble cause. Public service is not only vital for our country, but extraordinarily rewarding for those who serve and want to make a difference. We will also address the practicalities facing recent graduates in these conversations, including how to secure meaningful jobs in the public sector, and how to pay your student loans while serving the public good.”
Kathleen Boozang, the dean of Seton Hall University School of Law, said the series falls in line with the school’s goals.
“Seton Hall Law has a long history of graduates in service of the public,” she said. “The Christie series will support our efforts to sustain that commitment. Especially now, Seton Hall Law wants to introduce our students and recent grads to public servants who can explain the pathway to the executive, judiciary or legislature.
“It’s our job to make sure they are well-prepared. Both Justices Patterson and Timpone dedicated part of their legal careers to public service even before being elevated to the New Jersey Supreme Court by Gov. Christie. Their career paths show that anything is possible, and I know that will inspire our students and graduates.”
Patterson, an associate justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, was nominated by Christie in 2011. She was renominated for tenure by Gov. Phil Murphy in 2018. She is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Cornell Law School. She was formerly a partner at Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland & Perretti in Morristown, and a former deputy attorney general and special assistant to former New Jersey Attorney General Peter Perretti Jr.
Timpone, a former associate justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, was nominated by Christie in 2016. He retired from the Court in August 2020, and now serves as senior counsel to Calcagni & Kanefsky in Newark.
He is a graduate of St. Francis College, New York University and Seton Hall University School of Law. He formerly served as an assistant U.S. attorney in Newark and led the office’s Special Prosecutions Division. He was formerly a partner at McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter.
