Tom Calcagni and Eric Kanefsky met as federal prosecutors at the United States Attorney’s Office. In the Office’s Civil, Criminal, and Special Prosecutions Divisions, as they developed an inside appreciation for the role and responsibility of a federal prosecutor, Tom and Eric sharpened their skills investigating and trying to verdict high-profile matters involving false claims, healthcare fraud, complex commercial fraud, and public corruption.

Both Tom and Eric went on to serve the State of New Jersey, each appointed by the Governor and unanimously confirmed by the Senate to lead New Jersey’s State Division of Consumer Affairs. As the State’s top consumer affairs official, each serving successive terms as Director, Tom and Eric led the 600-person civil law enforcement and regulatory agency within the Office of the Attorney General, regulating New Jersey’s securities and healthcare professionals and directing the investigation and prosecution of hundreds of consumer fraud and professional misconduct matters.

Tom later served as New Jersey’s First Assistant Attorney General, the second-highest position in the 8,000-employee Department of Law and Public Safety. Overseeing the New Jersey State Police, the State Office of Insurance Fraud Prosecutor, and New Jersey’s Divisions of Criminal Justice, Consumer Affairs, and Gaming Enforcement, Tom managed the Department’s most-sensitive criminal and civil investigations and prosecutions, frequently serving as Acting Attorney General for the State.

In April of 2014, Tom and Eric established Calcagni & Kanefsky LLP as a Newark- and New York-based litigation and investigations boutique. Building on the breadth of their public service experience – civil and criminal at both the federal and state level – they purposefully crafted a modern firm with a client-driven culture, focused on helping companies and individuals with their most-sensitive concerns.
